William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson were childhood friends who created a legacy. They began with a single-cylinder engine to enhance the simple design of pedal bikes. However, they realized it wasn’t powerful enough, so they set out to build something that would work without pedals at all.
After their initial release, the team continued to make advancements and innovations to their designs. Within seven years of their first release, they were making bikes with twice the power!
Building the Name
Although they were off to a great start, WWI brought rapid growth for the duo. There was high demand for motorcycles and they stepped up to provide the supply. By the end of 1920, Harley-Davidson was named the largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet. Their success and reputation grew and everyone wanted their own model.
Even during the Great Depression, the company was able to maintain operations and continue building their name in the industry. Then, WWII brought about a whopping order for 90,000 motorcycles to be made.
