Indian Motorcycle® Company History
For the past century, Indian Motorcycle® has been dedicated to delivering American-made bikes to loyal customers. The company was originally named after the founder, George M. Early History
George Hendee spent a few years developing his motorcycles before partnering with Oscar Hedstrom. The pair created three prototype motorcycles together. It wasn’t long before they developed their 1.75 bhp single-cylinder engine, which was an instant hit that further contributed to the company’s success.
In 1902, the first Indian Motorcycle® production models were released. A year later, one of the company’s bikes set the world record for motorcycle speed. The first V-twin factory racer eventually hit the track and brought home trophies and set records.
Mid-Century History
At the start of World War I, the United States government purchased a large number of the Indian Motorcycle® 1917-18 Powerplus line models. As a result, this inventory was unavailable to the public. The company had fewer products to sell, so many Indian® dealers ended up closing their doors. This also meant that many passionate Indian Motorcycle® customers had to look elsewhere, so the company lost its footing in the market. They also lost their title as the top motorcycle manufacturer in the country.
Post-War History
When World War II ended, a group led by Ralph B. Rogers purchased a controlling share of the Indian Motorcycle® Company. He worked hard to take the business in a new direction, which included discontinuing many of their successful lines. Rogers focused on building lightweight bikes. By 1953, the brand moved back and forth between different controlling groups, which resulted in many different names and designs over the years.
In April 2011, Polaris Industries acquired the company. In 2013, Indian Motorcycle® had expanded to ten models. The bikes you see on the market today are much like the original. These models offer tons of power, agility, speed, and style.
