Having the opportunity to test out a motorcycle before you commit to it can make the buying process a lot more successful. However, there are a few things to know before you head to the dealership for a test run! Our team at Brookfield Indian Motorcycle® has put together a brief guide to help you prepare for a great test ride experience.

1. Schedule in Advance

Motorcycle test rides are a bit different than test driving a car or truck. It’s important you call the dealership in advance to schedule your visit. This will help with a few different things, including making sure the model you’re interested in is available on the day of your ride.

Scheduling in advance also proves you’re seriously interested! To make better use of your time, choose a day and time that fits well in your schedule and will give you the best chance to try out all of the motorcycle’s capabilities.

2. Be Prepared for Your Ride

When the day of your test ride arrives, there are a few things you’ll need to bring with you. You’ll need:

  • Proof of insurance
  • A valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement
  • Your own safety and riding gear

The dealership will need to make a copy of your driver’s license and insurance card in order for you to complete the test ride. They also aren’t likely to provide a helmet and other riding gear, so you’ll need to come prepared with personal gear and dress appropriately for the weather.

3. Acclimate to the Motorcycle Before Riding

Since this is the first time you’ll be operating this specific bike, it’s important to take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the model before you hit the road. Complete a walkthrough of the controls; this also gives you a chance to inspect the motorcycle.

Make sure the motorcycle also complements your stature. You should be able to comfortably place your feet on the ground, view all mirrors, reach all controls, and easily mount and dismount from the bike.

If you don’t feel comfortable, don’t push yourself to continue with the test ride! Tell someone your concerns and make adjustments if possible. You may have to reconsider your choice if the concerns can’t be resolved.

4. Pay Attention to Your Likes and Dislikes

It’s easy to be overly critical or too excited when you’re enjoying a test ride. Be sure to find a balance between your critical thinking and excitement to really evaluate what you like and don’t like about the motorcycle. Pay attention to how it rides and how you feel while riding it!
